Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
